This chart applies the 2013 US governments calculation for the "social cost of carbon" (SCC) to a barrel of the Alberta oilsands oil. The oilsands industry hasn't reduced CO2 per barrel fast enough to overcome the fact that the damage to society from each tonne of CO2 has increased over time. As a result, damage to society per barrel has been increasing dramatically with no end in sight. Focus on tonnes of CO2 hides the real metric of concern: damage to society.
